1. What is Contactus?

Contactus is the name of our publishing company (one word, small letter ‘u’), celebrating our aim of putting shops in contact with shoppers. We started off in 2012 producing two free, A5-sized magazines specifically about businesses in Ealing. They were called ‘Contactus Ealing’ and ‘Ealing Homebiz’. By March 2014, ‘Ealing Homebiz’ was incorporated into ‘Contactus Ealing’ so we could reach more people in Ealing. ‘Contactus Ealing’ is entirely created, produced and printed in Ealing, London. In 2015, we published nine magazines both online and in print, including two specials: ‘Contactus Chiswick’ and ‘Contactus Acton’. In 2016 we’re launching ‘The_Ealinger’, a weekly online mini-magazine.

2. Why ‘Contactus Ealing’ and ‘Ealing Homebiz’?

‘Contactus Ealing’ focuses on traders with a walk-in shop-front or office premises, like restaurants, flower shops or the local deli. To make sure we offered exposure to as many shops as possible, we started off as a roving magazine highlighting a different shopping parade in Ealing each issue. First there was Pitshanger Lane, then Northfield Avenue, to Hanwell, across West Ealing, and Ealing Broadway town centre and down South Ealing Road, before putting out a mega “Ealing all-areas”. In addition to featuring stories about the shopping parade, we carried a rough directory of shops, called the Shopfinder.
‘Ealing Homebiz’ features smaller businesses that are operated from home or online-only, such as business coaching, graphic designers or handmade decorations. It is chockfull of stories of interest to home-run businesses, such as tax, tech and taking time off. You can still choose to appear in the ‘Ealing Homebiz’ section of ‘Contactus Ealing’.

3. So ‘Contactus Ealing’ is not a news/events/lifestyle magazine?

There’s lots of ‘what’s on in Ealing’ info available via other local publications and websites. The content of ‘Contactus Ealing’ magazine is designed to showcase local entrepreneurs so residents would be encouraged to shop local and support local businesses. The magazine is also to be a place where local businesses can advertise and show off their products and services.

4. How often does the magazine come out?

We started off with four issues a year – March, June, September and December, and in 2015 went up to nine a year: Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr and so on, including the two special issues highlighting businesses in Chiswick (in May) and then Acton (at Christmas). The online version comes out a few weeks before the printed version. The_Ealinger comes out every Monday in 2016.

5. How many copies do you print?

We print 1000 for distribution in libraries, shops, networking and by subscription, and further boost the magazine via social media and websites, which takes our online audience to averaging nearly 9000 views per magazine.

6. Where do you distribute the magazines – and where can I get a copy?

‘Contactus Ealing’ gets delivered mainly to local libraries, cafes, businesses and via networking meetings (Athena, Ealing Chamber of Commerce, Fabulous Women, etc). By following us on Twitter and Facebook, and signing up to our e-updates on the Home page, you’ll find out which businesses are stocking copies of the latest issue. As the magazines are not news-dated, we are able to stagger the distribution across several months. We also heavily promote the issue on social media, especially Twitter, and Facebook and LinkedIn.

7. Who are your readers?

A lot of our readers are business-owners: shopowners and entrepreneurs – who may not only become your clients, but know how to spread the word about your business to their own clients and are quite likely to give the magazine a close look if not read it cover to cover.

8. How can I get my business featured in ‘Contactus Ealing’?

Every advertiser is guaranteed coverage to match the size of ad taken. For example, a business taking a half-page advert automatically gets a half-page story.

9. Haven’t you heard: print is dead – why are you producing paper magazines instead of just doing it all online?

Ha ha, print is very much alive, and kicking good and hard, especially local magazines, and, in our case, the rare and special hyperlocal magazine. As there are only two or three Ealing-specific independent publications, there is hardly any opportunity for advertisers to reach clients through the traditional and trustworthy print media. That’s why we’re here. (Plus, we’ve been making printed magazines for over 20 years; it’s what we’re good at.) Print is much quicker and easier to access than online, and large sections of the local shopping population remain unconnected to the internet. We can reach them.

13. Why should I advertise my business in Contactus?

1. Because it’s affordable – you can’t get high-quality display in a full-colour magazine space like this anywhere else in Ealing starting from £20. 2. Because we go straight to your target audience, whether through their letterboxes, online feeds, or into their hands. 3. Because the reach is amazing: 1000 copies can reach over 2000 local people, plus the thousands of online readers; can you potentially be seen by so many people for such little outlay? If you’re an Ealing business, advertising in Contactus should be an essential consideration in your marketing strategy. Our handbook-sized format produced by in-house award-winning layout designer (Carlene Bender, ahem) is just right to take along for a quick read at bus-stops, the bank queue and for those moments of taking a break from the computer screen…

15. How can I tell if my print advert is working?

We’ve tried several methods of tracking: 1. vouchers – add these to the ad to gauge up-take; 2. ask new customers where they found you; 3. add a unique email address/phone number to your ad to track where customers are coming from; 4. ask people who live in the target area if they’ve seen your ad.
Print media continues to be the traditional, trustworthy and long-lasting marketing tool of choice. A new customer is unlikely to tell you that they’ve seen your print advert (new customers are shy this way), but the credibility that comes with being seen in print is undoubtable. Consider my theory of “levels of familiarisation”: the chances of a new customer “yielding” to a marketing campaign increases after every additional level of exposure to a brand or product. Thus, all aspects of ‘online’ count as one level – Twitter, Facebook, website, blogging etc. Other effective levels are broadcast media (tv and radio), networking/word-of-mouth – and print. Winning a new customer is hardly ever down to just one level, which is why it’s inadvisable to put all of a business’s marketing eggs in the one online basket. Diversify your marketing to include another familiarisation level, and see the whole campaign bring in more customers. Your print advert, as part of an overall marketing strategy, will be working. Like a jazzed-up business card, your Contactus advert will be working to familiarise potential customers (in far greater numbers than you can reach handing out business cards or flyers); working as a back-up reference for people once you’ve met them; and then working to keep reminding customers of your service and your message. So, in short, it is not easy to count how many new customers your print advert has attracted, because print advertising just doesn’t work that way. But: consider for example the negative impression it sends (the anti-advertising if you like), if a magazine is published about your shopping parade but you’re not in it…
